Remington Hot Springs, California

Located about 50 minutes north of Bakersfield, just south of Lake Isabella, you’ll find Remington hot springs. This is one of our favorite hot springs in Southern California. It’s easily accessible, the tubs are uniquely constructed along the beautiful Kern river, and the waters are a perfect temperature. Warm up in the hot springs and then take an invigorating dip in the chilly Kern River!

About Remington Hot Springs

The Remington Hot Springs are natural, free to access hot springs in California and have been constructed by local residents. The custom concrete stonework allows the hot spring waters to flow into three unique tubs. The tubs were built with locally sourced rocks and so the aesthetic of the tubs fits right into the beautiful Southern California natural environment. The water begins in the first tub and then flows to the 2nd and 3rd ones as the water gradually cools down. The water at its source is around 105 degrees and cools down to about 99 degrees by the time it hits the third tub (although it varies based on the season). The waters are a little bit sulfurous and so be prepared for a bit of aroma (the good news is that sulphur has a lot of health benefits and is great for skin health!)

Getting to Remington Hot Springs is part of the adventure. It involves a short hike from the parking area down to the river, which means you'll need to be a bit prepared—wear good walking shoes and bring water. But once you're there, the effort is totally worth it! The pools are maintained by volunteers, so they're clean and inviting. Since it's an open, natural area, remember to pack out what you pack in, keeping it beautiful for everyone. Visiting these hot springs offers a unique experience to connect with nature, unwind in the warm waters, and enjoy the serenity of the forest.

Tips for Visiting Remington Hot Springs

Clothing Optional – Clothing is optional at these hot springs and there is usually a lot of nudity.
Crowds – These hot springs are generally pretty crowded with both locals and travelers passing by. Try to come on a weekday for less crowds.
Take a Dip in the River – Kern River is perfect for taking a refreshing dip after warming up in the hot springs. There are even some rock diving opportunities!
No Glass – Please do not bring glass to these natural hot springs.
Dogs – Dogs are welcome, but please keep your doggo on a leash.
Clean Up – These hot springs are clean and well maintained. Please help keep them that way. Pack it in and pack it out!

Directions to Remington Hot Springs

The hot springs are located off of HWY 178, just before lake Isabella. Open up the Google map above for exact directions. Once you arrive, you’ll find a dirt parking lot. The hot springs are very easy to access from the parking lot. A dirt path of a few hundred feet will bring you to the hot springs right next to the Kern river.

When I visit Remington Hot Springs, finding good food nearby is part of the adventure. Here are my go-to places:

Kern River Brewing Company - It's in Kernville, about a 20-minute drive from the hot springs. They have great beer, which they brew right there, and their burgers and fries are delicious. It's a cozy spot to relax after a day at the springs.
Cheryl's Diner - Also in Kernville, Cheryl's is where I head for breakfast or a hearty lunch. The vibe is friendly, and their pancakes and omelets are my favorites. It's like stepping into a classic diner from the past.
Cracked Egg Cafe - Located a bit further in Lake Isabella, this cafe is worth the drive for their breakfast. The place is small but the food is big on flavor. Their biscuits and gravy, in particular, are a must-try.
El Rio Mexican Restaurant - When I'm in the mood for Mexican food, El Rio in Lake Isabella hits the spot. Their enchiladas and tacos are really good, and they serve generous portions.
Starlite Lounge - Back in Kernville, Starlite Lounge is my pick for a nice dinner. It's a bit fancier, with a great selection of wines and some of the best steaks and seafood around. The ambiance is perfect for winding down.

Is Remington Hot Springs Worth It?

Yes, I think Remington Hot Springs is definitely worth the visit. It's a unique, natural hot spring located right beside the beautiful Kern River. The drive there is scenic, and the hot springs themselves are a series of small, man-made pools with natural hot water that's perfect for soaking and relaxing. What makes it stand out is the mix of nature and comfort, plus the views of the river and mountains are stunning. It's also free, which is a big plus. However, it's important to go early or during the week to avoid crowds, and remember to pack out what you bring in to keep the place clean. Overall, the experience is very peaceful and rejuvenating.
